TEACHING EXPERTISE

I teach and mentor future exercise physiologists with a focus on clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice and research translation. In the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology, I chair Exercise Behaviour and Mental Health and Exercise for the Management of Neurological and Neuromuscular Disease. I use these units to help students apply exercise physiology in complex areas of practice, including mental health, chronic disease, neurological conditions.

I draw on more than 20 years of clinical experience and my translational research program to connect classroom learning with real-world practice. I have led curriculum redesign, including revised learning outcomes, authentic client-based learning, assessment review and stronger alignment with professional practice requirements. This work aimed to improve clinical readiness and student confidence before placement.

My teaching also focuses on inclusive and practice-based learning. I have used real-client practical sessions to help students build skills in interviewing, motivational interviewing, goal setting and problem solving. Student feedback identified these client interactions as a highlight and the model was retained for future offerings.

I supervise and mentor honours students, higher degree researchers, early-career academics and clinicians. My goal is to develop graduates who can think critically, translate evidence into practice and contribute to better health services for patients and communities.
