BIO
Muhammad Islam is a Teaching Fellow in the School of Information Technology at Deakin University and holds a PhD in Computer Science. His academic work combines a strong commitment to teaching excellence with applied research in distributed, intelligent and emerging computing technologies. His academic experience spans Deakin University, Swinburne University, Monash University and the University of Melbourne, while his current contributions include unit leadership, curriculum enhancement, assessment design and collaboration across teaching teams. He also contributes to Deakin's international partnership teaching, supporting the delivery of Information Technology education with partner institutions in Sri Lanka and India.
His teaching is centred on student-centred learning, authentic and portfolio-based assessment, active learning, learning design, and the responsible use of Generative AI in education. His teaching contributions have been recognised through the 2025 School of Engineering and Built Environment Teaching Excellence Award, a Deakin teaching excellence team award in 2023, and recognition for high student satisfaction at Swinburne University in 2022. His current teaching and learning scholarship investigates approaches to portfolio-based assessment that strengthen academic integrity, support the appropriate use of Generative AI, and enhance student learning.
Muhammad's current research focuses on mobile collaborative computing and edge- and IoT-enabled intelligent systems, including the development of cost-effective multimodal solutions for smart waste management and early hazard detection. This work builds on his doctoral research in privacy-preserving blockchain technologies for Industrial IoT environments. His research has been published in leading venues including Information Sciences and the IEEE Internet of Things Journal.
