DrMadeleine Hale

Dr Madeleine Hale is a Lecturer in the Deakin Law School. Madeleine's research focuses on free speech, political theory, legal theory and social media, with a particular focus on content moderation and censorship. Madeleine completed her PhD in free speech, democracy and social media at Deakin Law School, where she received the Deakin University Medal in 2026 for the most outstanding doctoral thesis. Prior to her work at Deakin, Madeleine was a Sessional Lecturer and Tutor at Monash Law School. She is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching (Sessional) Award 2023 for the Australian Legal Education Awards (ALEA). Madeleine teaches various units including property law, torts law and administrative law. Before commencing her PhD, Madeleine worked as a Corporate Lawyer at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer and worked in the social media team at The Project on Network Ten. Madeleine graduated from a combined Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws with Honours from Monash University.
