TEACHING EXPERTISE

Across his academic career, Prof Butterworth has supervised over 30 PhD candidates (as primary supervisor or member of a supervisory panel).

Examples of recent doctoral projects from students outside Deakin include:

  • Adverse life events, mental health and mental health treatment
  • The longitudinal relationship between financial hardship and mental health;
  • The association of work-family conflict with suicidal ideation and common mental disorders.

Peter’s previous academic roles in research-only centres did not provide an opportunity for supervision of honours/4th year projects. Since commencing at Deakin he has supervised 4th-year student projects focusing on mental health and cognition, including:

  • Maternal adverse life events and child mental health
  • Religiosity, mastery and mental health service use
  • Benefit receipt, financial hardship and mental health
  • The transition from school to university and change in mental health
