Professor Andrew Sinclair is Professor of Nutrition Science in the School of
Medicine, based in the Metabolic Research Unit, Waurn Ponds campus, at Deakin
University. Professor Sinclair teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate
level and also supervises higher degree students. He has twice been awarded
the postgraduate supervisor of the year (Deakin University and RMIT
University). Professor Sinclair has a PhD from the University of Melbourne.
Professor Sinclair spent 10 years in the Victorian Department of Agriculture,
being a senior research scientist at the Veterinary Research Institute in
Parkville from 1975 until 1985. Following that, he joined RMIT University and
from 1995 held the position of Chair in Food Science until 2005. In 2006,
Professor Sinclair accepted a Chair at Deakin University. He was elected
Fellow of Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology in 2001 and a
Fellow of the Nutrition Society of Australia in 2003. Professor Sinclair is an
Editor of the British Journal of Nutrition and on the Editorial Board of the
Elsevier journal, Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids. He
also serves on the AOCS Press Books and Publications committee and in 1999 was
awarded the prestigious Supelco/Nicholas Pellick AOCS Research Award.
Professor Sinclair is the Chair of the Australian Academy of Science,
Nutrition Committee. Professor Sinclair has been the co-convenor of two major
international conferences: the 3rd International Conference on Essential Fatty
Acids and Eicosanoids, held in Adelaide in 1992, and the 2006 conference of
the International Society for Fatty Acids and Lipids, held in Cairns.
Professor Sinclair is an active researcher in a range of areas related to
fatty acid metabolism in man and animals and the composition of foods (lipids
and fat soluble vitamins). His latest research interests are in the role of
essential nutrients in brain function (zinc, DHA), metabolism of DPAn-3,
lipidomic analysis of chylomicrons and omega 3 fatty acid metabolism in fish
and mammals.
