BIO

Hasnan Bachtiar is a PhD candidate at Deakin University, Australia, with a specialisation in the interdisciplinary field of the study of religion, law, society and politics. He has been working as a research assistant to Prof Ihsan Yilmaz at the Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation (ADI) as part of the research project entitled "Religious Populism, Emotions, and Political Mobilisation: Civilisationism in Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan" (2022-2025), which is funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) under the Discovery Grant [DP220100829]. In addition to his role at Deakin University, he serves as a lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Indonesia. He previously held the position of research director at the RBC Institute Abdul Malik Fadjar, where he was involved as a research associate with Prof Pradana Boy Zulian in the European Commission’s GREASE project (Radicalisation, Secularism and the Governance of Religion), which is coordinated by the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. Hasnan is an active member of the Early Career Researchers Network (ECRN) at the European Centre for Populism Studies (ECPS) in Brussels, Belgium, and the Australian Political Studies Association (APSA).
