DrCaroline James-Garrod

As a Teaching Fellow in Communication (Journalism) at Deakin, I have unit chaired various Communication and Journalism units at under-graduate and post-graduate level across campuses and online.

My current position within the School of Communication and Creative Arts (SCCA) at Deakin extends from prior rich teaching experiences at Monash University's School of Media, Film and Journalism and at The Centre for Advancing Journalism and Information Integrity (CAJII) at The University of Melbourne.

Joining teaching and higher research from a 21-year career spanning professional journalism in Australia and overseas, I bring energy and industry expertise to my interdisciplinary work at Deakin.

My educational approach is 'learning by doing', supported by rich peer and student-teacher interaction and topical case studies that illuminate concepts boosting engagement and academic achievement.

My research focuses on local news and regional audiences, digital connection and disconnecton rights and practices, time poverty and social time ethics. 

Current projects include research of regional audiences and paying for news in collaboration with Drs T.J. Thomson from RMIT and Tim Koskie from the University of Sydney, and independent research of journalists' perspectives of the Australian right to disconnect from work communications.
