BIO

Onik is a PhD candidate in the School of IT at Deakin University. He is investigating the impacts of encryption regulations on cybersecurity practices. His research interests include cybercrime, encryption law, tech law and policy, privacy, digital surveillance, spyware, and cyber security. Onik has published several conference and journal articles and has invented multiple US and South Korean patents.

Encryption laws often mandate the inclusion of features that compromise product security, facilitating backdoors for law enforcement agencies into tech companies' products and services. Onik aims to investigate the challenges associated with such regulations, explore the navigation strategies in response to these challenges, and analyse their primary impacts on the cyber security practices of Australian tech companies.

Before his doctoral studies, Onik completed his master’s degree at Inje University, South Korea, specializing in privacy-enhancing technology development for regulatory compliance. His master’s research focused on 'Privacy-aware Blockchain Technology for Personal Information Sharing and Tracking'.

With experience in the software industry and academia, Onik's passion lies in research and teaching. While lecturing at American International University-Bangladesh, he guided several undergraduates through their theses. Before that, he was an active researcher at the Computer and Communication lab, at Inje University, South Korea.

Driven by a belief in the power of hard work, dedication, and gratitude, Onik strives to excel in every opportunity he is given. He dreams of establishing his own research facility to delve deeper into his interests and make meaningful contributions to technology, particularly in cyber policy.
