BIO

Rahmat Agung Azmi Putra (Agung) is an international PhD student from Indonesia specialising in Metacognition, Critical Literacy, and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at the School of Education, Deakin University. His doctoral research focuses on developing a metacognitive-based academic writing model designed to enhance the critical literacy skills of Indonesian higher education students. Through this model, he aims to empower students to think critically, engage reflectively with diverse texts, and position themselves as active, socially aware participants in literacy practices. He is currently supervised by Dr. Sarah Ohi and Associate Professor Rod Neilsen, experts in Language and Literacy Education and Teaching English to the Speaker of Other Languages (TESOL).

His research interests are deeply rooted in his professional background prior to his doctoral journey. He has worked extensively in academia as a Research Assistant in English Language Education and as a casual tutor and lecturer at several universities in Indonesia, focusing on English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Furthermore, his experience as a teaching assistant in rural Victorian schools in Australia in teaching Indonesian to speakers of other languages (Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing), provided him with unique cross-cultural insights into language pedagogy. Throughout his PhD candidacy, he has also had the opportunity to serve as a Graduate Research Teaching Fellow within the School of Education, where he involved in teaching and marking for some units related to Language and Literacy.

At a broader level, his academic interests encompass Language and Literacy Education, TESOL, and Critical Pedagogy in Language Teaching.
