BIO

Matthew Barnett is a Deakin distinguished Professor of Metallurgy and ARC Laureate Fellow. He began his career as a metallurgy trainee with BHP Steel (Western Port Works) while studying towards his Bachelor of Metallurgy at RMIT. Since 1999 he has been a member of the faculty at Deakin University. Matthew has held ARC QEII and Future Fellowships. He served as Director of the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) between 2018 and 2022. He was also Director of the ARC mineAlloy training centre over the period 2018 to 2023. His current ARC Laureate project is entitled: “Alloy Alchemy: New paradigms in alloy science to promote a circular economy”.
