BIO

Mats is Associate Professor at the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), Deakin University, and Principal Researcher at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. His research focuses on the application of exercise and physical activity as interventions to promote mental health. He has designed and led to successful completion five community-based randomized controlled trials involving >1300 participants and >100 large-scale epidemiological studies. His current research examines the effects of sedentary screen use on brain activity and psychological wellbeing in young people. Findings from his research have directly impacted public health guidelines internationally. As principal investigator, he has received >$4.8 million in competitive grant funding. Editor in Chief of the scientific journal Mental Health and Physical Activity (2022-onwards). Mats has published 161 scientific articles (~half as first/last author), H-index=56, >6000 citations.
