BIO

Dr Rachael McMillan is a clinician researcher who works academically in the School of Medicine at Deakin University and clinically as an Advanced Practice Physiotherapist in public Emergency Department and Urgent Care settings, as well as elite football (Football Australia).  Rachael has worked clinically as Head Physiotherapist with professional and elite football teams including the Australian Women's Football Teams (Young Matildas), Melbourne Victory FC Women and Box Hill United FC Senior Women, as well as professional and semi-professional UK based football teams.

Rachael's PhD investigated gluteal tendon and muscle adaptations in active populations and those with pain, including a collaborative project with the Australian Ballet. Rachael has won multiple awards for her research investigating hormone therapy and exercise as interventions for postmenopausal women with greater trochanteric pain syndrome/gluteal tendinopathy. Rachael is now lead investigator for a new pilot randomised clinical trial (EMPOWER Trial, ANZCTR 12626000252314), investigating hormone therapy and exercise as interventions for postmenopausal women with tendon-related shoulder pain.

Rachael is involved in a range of tendon and other musculoskeletal, clinical sports medicine and emergency medicine research projects.  Rachael is a member of the Institute for Mental and Physical Health and Clinical Translation (IMPACT) and the Barwon Centre for Orthopaedic Research and Education (B-CORE).
