DrKasey Symons

Kasey Symons is a Lecturer of Communication - Sports Media at Deakin University in Melbourne. Kasey works across a range of projects that centre the experiences of women and non binary people in sport, sports media and sports fandom. Kasey's interdisciplinary approach to research sees her working across sport for development, sport management, sociology, history, creative writing, literary studies, media studies and sport and social impact. Kasey has completed a Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing), Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) and PhD at Victoria University. Kasey's creative PhD thesis investigated experiences of women fans of elite men's sport through the lens of gender bias and performance.

Kasey’s recent research interests include community development through sport, undertaking a broad range of research projects with national and regional sport organisations in Australia including the Victorian Government, National Rugby League and Australian Football League. Other recent research include access and equity in sport participation, sport and recreation for at-risk and marginalised communities, sport marketing and fan engagement and representation of women in sport in literature, media and popular culture. Kasey is also the media manager for the North American based Sport Literature Association.

Kasey frequently works in the media predominantly covering women's sport. Kasey is a recipient of a Melbourne Press Club Michael Gordon Fellowship and was nominated for a Quill Award in 2020 for her coverage of women's sport.

Kasey's passion for supporting women and non-binary folk in sports media also motivated her to co-found the women in sport media collective, Siren Sport that provides programs, platforms and mentorship for emerging sports journalists. Siren Sport was nominated for an Australian Sports Commission Media Award for innovation in sports media in 2020.
