TEACHING EXPERTISE

Matthew is an award-winning educator committed to innovative and transformative teaching.

 

He has received multiple teaching excellence awards, including:

  • in 2023, an Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University for improving curriculum design and student learning outcomes in the undergraduate criminology program
  • in 2025, a Teaching and Learning Excellence Award from the Faculty of Arts and Education at Deakin University for teaching and assessment practices that support student learning and enhance the student experience.

 

Matthew has also contributed to the scholarship of teaching and learning, including by publishing research on creative methods for teaching social theory.

 

Matthew is committed to leadership in higher education and has led curriculum development and quality assurance initiatives at the course, school, and university levels. He currently serves as Deputy Course Director for the Bachelor of Arts and as a member of the Faculty Board for the Faculty of Arts and Education at Deakin. He previously served as Honours Coordinator in Social Inquiry and as an elected member of the Academic Board at La Trobe.

 

At Deakin, Matthew teaches in the core criminology program, including ACR202 Explaining Crime and ACR703 Critical Criminological Perspectives and delivers guest lectures in first-year units ACR101 and ACR102. He also co-coordinates the APE700/APE701 Internship Program for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
