BIO

Dr Jonas Benjamim is a Research Fellow at Deakin’s Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (Deakin IPAN), within the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences. Dr Benjamim’s internationally recognised research program explores how exercise, nutrition, nitric oxide biology, redox regulation, vascular function, and metabolic health interact to regulate healthy ageing, exercise capacity, blood pressure control, and cardiometabolic disease risk. Through the identification of modifiable molecular and physiological mechanisms, his research continues to explore new ways to harness lifestyle-based strategies, particularly exercise and nutrition, for the prevention and management of chronic diseases such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and age-related functional decline. Dr Benjamim also contributes to the scientific community as Social Media Editor for the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Associate Editor for Nutrition & Metabolism.

His research career is underscored by invited national and international presentations, competitive fellowships and grant funding exceeding AUD $500,000, and publications in leading journals such as Redox Biology, Free Radical Biology and Medicine and Clinical Nutrition. The impact of his research has been recognised through several awards, including the Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, PhD Thesis of the Year Award from the University of Sao Paulo, Young Investigator Awards from the Society for Redox Biology and Medicine, the European Society for Free Radical Research, and the Society for Redox Research Australasia, as well as recognition from the American Physiological Society. Dr Benjamim has experience in randomised clinical trials, translational exercise-nutrition interventions, nitric oxide and redox biomarker assessment, vascular and cardiometabolic physiology, meta-research, and science communication. He also supports the development of national scientific societies through committee roles with the Nutrition Society of Australia, including the Mentor Reviewers Editorial Board, and the Australian Society for Medical Research Victorian Committee, where he contributes to early-career researcher development, scientific engagement, and professional leadership.
