BIO
Natalie Charles is a PhD candidate in Criminology at Deakin University, supervised by Professor David Bright and Associate Professor James Martin. Her research examines Australian nicotine policy decisions and how networks of policy actors and policy positions emerge to influence policy. This research follows on from her honours thesis, which analysed the media representations of stakeholders in the illicit tobacco market in Victoria.
Natalie’s broader research interests include covert networks, illicit markets, and how regulatory frameworks shape criminal markets and behaviours. She has also worked as a research assistant exploring consumer behaviours and perceptions of the Australian illicit nicotine market.
Natalie is a member of the Criminology Research Group and Covert Networks Lab, and her research is supported by the Commonwealth through an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship.
