BIO

Jai Martin (he/him) is a doctoral researcher at Deakin University, Melbourne Australia. His current research is on: ‘Trans young adult literature: A new era? An analysis of post-2015 YA novels with transgender perspectives’. Jai previously completed a Master of Journalism at the University of Melbourne with a minor thesis addressing the topic: 'Transgender representation in 1950s written media: A mixed-method analysis of Australian newspaper articles'. As a proud transgender man, Jai's research interests include transgender lived experience and how that experience is translated into representation. With a focus on trans embodiment and authenticity, Jai’s research is focused on representations that empower trans voices and address the intersection of transness with race, class and disability. He also has a strong research focus on children's and young adult literature and how themes and discourses included in literature have the ability to empower and educate young readers as their identities develop.
