BIO
Sumedha Choudhury is an academic at Deakin Law School whose research focuses on the history and theory of international law. Her work examines the relationship between international law, statelessness, and minority rights, with particular attention to how concepts of statehood, nationality, and minority protection have historically produced—and continue to reproduce—statelessness in postcolonial contexts.
At Deakin, Sumedha teaches Resolving Disputes and Legal Communication and Migration and Refugee Law and Policy.
Prior to joining Deakin, she held research and teaching appointments at Melbourne Law School and worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in India in the Refugee Status Determination (RSD) Unit.
Sumedha completed her PhD at Melbourne Law School. She holds an MSc in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies from the Refugee Studies Centre at the University of Oxford and an LLM from South Asian University.
She has published in leading international journals, including the London Review of International Law, the International Journal of Discrimination and the Law, and the Asian Journal of International Law.
Sumedha welcomes inquiries from PhD, Masters and Honours students in the areas of international law, statelessness, refugee law and minority rights.
