BIO

Dr Tze Chuan 'Chewie' Ang is a Senior Lecturer in the Finance Discipline Group at Deakin Business School. His entire academic studies at the University of Melbourne, spanning his Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.), Master of Commerce (Hons.), and PhD in Finance was fully funded by multiple scholarships. He is well trained in finance, economics, and econometrics and was awarded the top doctoral student of the year.

 

The core of Dr Ang’s research lies in analysing the cross-section of stock returns. Specialising in asset-pricing anomalies, equity-lending, and short-selling, Dr Ang also investigates short-term financing and Australian financial issues. His research has been published in the Review of Asset Pricing Studies and the Journal of Banking and Finance, amongst other premier journals. Widely cited within academia, his work also attracts media attention.

 

Dr Ang has reviewed over 50 papers for 17 mid- to top-tier finance journals, including Management Science and the Journal of Banking and Finance, focusing on short-selling, trade credit, cash holdings, and empirical asset pricing. He has been collaborating with leading scholars at top business schools worldwide, including Emory University (US), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), HKUST (Hong Kong), Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Hitotsubashi University (Japan), the University of Melbourne (Australia), and others. He also actively engages with industry practitioners through dialogues, symposiums, and networking events.

 

Whilst Dr Ang is a specialist in teaching large classes (over 600 students), Dr Ang’s broad teaching portfolio covers major undergraduate and postgraduate finance subjects, ranging from introductory finance to advanced investments. He constantly updates the curriculum to incorporate state-of-the-art knowledge in finance. He is known for adopting authentic, inclusive, and evidence-based learning activities and has received excellent feedback year after year. He is also dedicated to mentoring and supervising undergraduate and doctoral students who were successfully placed in universities and industries globally.

 

During his free time, Dr Ang enjoys managing family-investment portfolios, playing the piano, making artworks, reading about politics, economics, and history, amongst other hobbies.
