BIO

I have had the privilege of working At Deakin for over 1.5 decades - before then I worked for 17 years in a science-based conservation organisation - starting at Deakin in 2007.

My key interest as a conservation biologist is to find effective solutions to biodiversity conservation challenges which permit coexistence between people and wildlife. Emphases include escape ecology, shorebirds and their breeding, sandy shores and the human dimensions of wildlife management. Much of my career has been in the not-for-profit scientific conservation sphere, where I worked to integrate science and conservation into actual conservation benefits for Australian birds and their habitats. I maintain strong connections with industry, especially with respect to the conservation of beach-nesting birds, and mitigating the threats they face.

I am the Deputy Course Director - Bachelor of Environmental Science (Wildlife and Conservation Biology) - and have previously been Course Director. I actively teach in dynamic classrooms and on immersive, authentic field trips. I have taught our globalised students in locations around the world, and learn a great deal from all of our energetic and engaged students.
