Director, ARC Research Hub for New Safe and Reliable Energy Storage and
Conversion Technologies
Professor Chen is well-known and respected internationally for his work in
nanomaterials and nanotechnology. The team he has put together is a world
leader in nanomaterials production and commercialisation. His current
research focuses on developing different synthesis methods (ball milling,
mechanochemistry, chemical/physical vapour deposition, and 3D printing) and
their applications (energy storage in batteries, capacitors, and fuel cells)
for a variety of nanomaterials including nanotubes (C and BN), nanosheets,
nanowires, nanorods, nanoparticles, and nano thin films(graphene). Professor
Chen is the Director of the ARC Research Hub of New Safe and Reliable Energy
Storage and Conversion Technologies.
Professor Ying (Ian) Chen obtained his Bs from Tsinghua University in Beijing,
China and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Paris-Sud, Orsay, France.
He had worked at the Australian National University, Canberra for 15 years
before moving to Deakin University in 2009. He has published 400 publications
with 30% articles published in the international top journals of impact factor
above 10, and listed by the ISI Web of Knowledge as the top author on two
topics of "boron nitride" and "ball milling", indicating his substantial
contribution to these research areas. His publications have been cited more
than 30,000 times with an H factor of 90 (google Scholar), 82 (Scopus), which has helped him gain recognition as one of the world's most influential researchers in cross fields, and a Clarivate™ Highly Cited Researchers™ for 2022 and 2023. He
has contributed several bestselling books on nanotechnology published by CRC
Press and Elsevier. Professor Chen has been awarded several prestigeious
awards including QEII/ARF fellowship from the Australian Research Council.
He has given invited presentations at international conferences every year.
Prof Chen's team at Deakin University is conducting world-leading research in
nanotechnology and advanced battery technology with the quality of well above
the international standard as recognised by Australian Research Council's
five-star ranking in the last round of Excellence in Research for Australia.
The outcomes of their research have been commercialised with substantial
investment from Australian industries through three new start-up companies.
