RESEARCH INTERESTS

Miles' research investigates collaborative creative practice: how performance, music and participatory arts create meaningful experiences of learning, connection, wellbeing and public engagement. His work sits at the intersection of creative practice research, participatory performance, applied theatre and industry-engaged scholarship, bringing together artists, researchers and community partners to explore how creative processes generate social, cultural and educational impact.

His research is organised around four interconnected themes:

  • Creative Practice and Wellbeing – investigating how collaborative creative activities, including music and performance, contribute to identity, belonging, mental health and community wellbeing.
  • Applied Performance and Professional Learning – exploring the use of performance, simulation and creative practice within professional training, organisational learning and community development.
  • Participatory Performance  – examining how artists design and facilitate meaningful public participation through performance, public art and socially engaged practice.
  • Creative Practice Research (NTROs) – creating original performance works that investigate sound, music, place and participation while contributing to contemporary scholarship through creative practice.

Across these areas, Miles works collaboratively with artists, cultural organisations and industry partners to develop research that moves fluidly between creative practice, scholarly publication and public impact. His current research agenda focuses on establishing collaborative research networks, developing externally funded projects and strengthening the role of creative practice as a catalyst for learning, participation and social connection.
