BIO

I innovate the composition of aluminium alloys to tackle current and future industry challenges.

 

My research focuses on better understanding microstructure development in aluminium alloys and the relationship between microstructures and bulk alloy properties.

My research innovates methodologies to characterize nm-sized precipitates using advanced techniques like atom probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy and small angle scattering (with X-rays or neutrons).


Lately, the focus of my team is on addition of scandium to aluminium alloys. Scandium infers incredible properties to aluminium and we have been working on working with industry to incorporating scandium in the aluminium alloys that they use. Potential applications are in aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding...etc

 

As a recognised global expert on the topic, I co-organise a yearly symposium on “Scandium Extraction and Use in Aluminium Alloys” as part of the TMS conference. 

I am passionate about establishing new industry collaborations for Deakin University, obtaining a total of >$4M of cash funding on industry projects over the past decade. Over that time, I have also obtained several grants from the Australian Research Council totalling >$1.6M.
