RESEARCH INTERESTS
Professor Walder's research is primarily focused on the discovery and
validation of novel drug treatments for complex diseases. This research
utilises state of the art equipment and technologies, in combination with
unique model systems and sample collections, to screen for small molecules
that can be used to treat complex diseases. The novel drug candidates are
tested in in vitro and in vivo model systems to establish their potential for
development as therapeutics.
Professor Walder works closely with the clinical research team at IMPACT,
based at University Hospital Geelong, and has a strong focus on translating
basic research findings into the clinical research program, with the
overarching aim of improving the lives of people with mental health disorders.
Knowledge Areas
Mental health (major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia).
Metabolic diseases (obesity, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver
disease).
Genetics.
Drug discovery.
Projects
See current School of Medicine Honours/PhD project booklet.
Current projects include:
Repurposing drugs to treat myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome
Repurposing drugs to treat bipolar disorder
Novel microRNAs involved in the pathophysiology
and treatment of bipolar disorder
Alternative approaches in the treatment of bipolar disorder
Exploration of potential novel therapies for affective disorders
