BIO
Dr Matthew Dunn is an Associate Professor in the School of Health and Social Development (HSD) and a member of the Institute for Health Transformation (IHT). Matthew joined Deakin University in 2011, after working at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) at the University of NSW for over five years. Matthew is an internationally recognised expert in the field of human enhancement drugs, with a specific focus on performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs) such as anabolic-androgrogenic steroids. Matthew's research interests include the use of, and harms/benefits associated with the use of, PIEDs; drug markets, including price, purity, and availability of substances; and how the social determinants of health impact and are impacted by substance use.
Matthew holds a number of leadership positions at Deakin, including as the Public Health and Health Promotion Discipline Lead; the HSD Chair for Academic Integrity and Progress Committee; and the Course Director for Postgraduate Health Promotion. Matthew teaches postgraduate health policy, as well as postgraduate alcohol and other drug studies; he has also taught at the undergraduate level. He supervisors Honours, Masters, and PhD students.
Matthew is a member of the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD), the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA), Sports Medicine Australia (SMA), and the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA). Matthew is the co-Editor in Chief of the journal Performance Enhancement & Health.
