BIO

Kelly Miller is a Professor and Environmental Social Scientist with more than 25 years of experience in social science and higher education. Her expertise spans quantitative and qualitative research methods, with a strong focus on the human dimensions of wildlife conservation, environmental management, sustainable behaviour change, ecotourism, environmental interpretation, and climate adaptation. With over 70 peer-reviewed publications, Kelly’s research examines the relationship between people and the natural environment, exploring how human values, attitudes, and behaviours can support biodiversity conservation and sustainable development at local, national, and global scales. She has extensive experience in social research and community engagement, and her work has informed conservation planning and sustainability education initiatives both in Australia and internationally.

An award-winning educator, Kelly has received numerous recognitions for excellence in teaching and student learning. These include a National Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning through the Australian Awards for University Teaching (2018), the W.J.C. Banks Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning as part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Teaching Excellence (2016), and finalist recognition in the Green Gown Awards Australasia in the Learning, Teaching and Skills category (2015).

Since 2018, Kelly has held the distinction of Senior Fellow of Advance HE, an internationally recognised professional body dedicated to excellence in higher education. In 2025, as Course Director for the Bachelor of Environmental Science and Sustainability, she led an extensive course review and professional accreditation through the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand. She currently serves as Graduate Research Director for the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment at Deakin University, where she leads and supports graduate research initiatives across the faculty.
