BIO

A/Prof Matteo Vergani leads cross-disciplinary research at Deakin University, focusing on mitigating the impact of hatred and extremism to strengthen democracy. His work spans social sciences, psychology, and data science, and he collaborates with colleagues across faculties to develop innovative methodologies and tools for addressing complex societal challenges, particularly related to online and offline hate. He has secured and completed numerous large grants, working with institutions such as the New South Wales Premier’s Department, the Australian Human Rights Commission, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety, the Australian Department of Home Affairs, Public Safety Canada, and various civil society and non-profit organisations, including the Islamophobia Register Australia and the Australian Red Cross. Matteo serves on the Editorial Board of ‘Terrorism and Political Violence’ and the Editorial Advisory Board of ‘Campbell Systematic Reviews’.
