BIO
Dr Diarmaid Harkin is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Deakin University and stream leader at Deakin Cyber. His primary research interests are in the field of cyber-security from a social scientific perspective. This has included projects examining the spyware industry; the impact of electronic surveillance laws on journalists; the challenges of cyber-policing; and a range of projects focused on the impacts of technology-facilitated abuse in the context of domestic and family violence.
Current active projects include building data on the prevalence of technology-facilitated abuse of women and children in Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu; reporting on the impacts of victim-survivors of domestic and family violence using CCTV; the challenges facing specialist police cybercrime units in Australia, Canada and the UK; using targeted digital advertising to address perpetrators of technology-facilitated abuse; and a variety of projects focusing on key developments in cyber-security including the growth of cyber threat intelligence companies, the continuing harms created by the spyware industry, and ways digital forensics companies are shaping contemporary policing and criminal justice.
Dr Harkin has led numerous major, inter-disciplinary projects funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, the Australian Communication and Consumer Action Network, and the Australian Insititute of Criminology.
