BIO
Kristin is an Associate Professor of Communication in the Faculty of Arts and Education and positioned in the academic field of 'critical public relations'.
Bringing into play her real-world political advocacy and professional communication experience, Kristin's research focuses on media and communication and its complex relationship to culture and social change. She has also brought these perspectives to a variety of leadership roles she has held, including as Faculty Chair of Human Ethics Advisory Group, and more recently as Higher Degree by Research Co-ordinator (School of Communication and Creative Arts).
Over the years, Kristin has recieved many accolades for her work, including in 2003, when the Australian Government honoured her with a Centenary of Federation Medal for her contributions to local community in urban place-making and environment.
In 2008 Kristin was Deakin University 'Teacher of the Year' as well as being awarded the WJC Banks Award, the VC's Award for Distinguished Teaching, and a Joint VC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching and Learning. Following, in 2009 she received National recognition with an Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.
Kristin drew extensively on her PhD (2007) when writing her 2013 acclaimed monograph 'Public Relations, Activism and Social Change, Speaking Up' (Routledge Research). In 2014, the monograph was the recipient of the National Communication Association, (USA), Book Award for Outstanding Innovation, Development, and Educational Achievement.
Kristin is currently an editor-in-chief for the Q1 peer-reviewed journal Public Relations Inquiry (Sage Publications).
