Teaching philosophy and approach

Associate Professor Alison Booth provides strategic leadership in teaching and learning, supporting academic staff to deliver student-centred education aligned with Deakin's strategic priorities and educational design principles. She champions authentic, inclusive, and employability-focused learning experiences that enhance student engagement, success, and graduate outcomes. Alison supports school teaching and learning leaders to adopt a whole-of-course approach to curriculum design and assessment, ensuring educational innovation is evidence-informed, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of students and industry. Through mentoring and coaching, she develops academic capability and educational leadership, enabling staff to meet academic standards and accreditation requirements while fostering a culture of collaboration, reflective practice, and genuine partnership with students. 

 

Teaching expertise

Alison has traditionally taught into both undergraduate and postgraduate nutrition degrees in the fields of nutrition promotion, public health nutrition, research skills, and has co-led international study tours. She is dedicated to developing research capability and support career development of early career researchers through supervision and research training in Honours, Masters and PhD programs.

 

Teaching impact

Alison has demonstrated university-wide leadership in curriculum, assessment and quality assurance. She helped shape Deakin’s Graduate Attributes and assessment reform agenda, led major curriculum renewal and accreditation activities, embedded authentic and assurance-of-learning assessment, advanced Indigenous and interprofessional learning, and redesigned programs to improve student wellbeing, progression and employability. Her leadership has strengthened academic standards, student outcomes and sector responsiveness across the School, Faculty and University.  

 

As Course Director and Associate Head of School (Teaching and Learning), she led major course reviews, introduced new courses and pathways, embedded work-integrated learning as a core requirement and aligned programs with national competencies and accreditation standards. She also championed accessible digital learning, authentic assessment and feedback reform, improved student satisfaction and graduate employability, and provided sustained mentoring and support for teaching teams to drive continuous improvement in learning and teaching quality.
