TEACHING EXPERTISE

Mariana is an engineering educator with expertise in authentic, industry-engaged and project-oriented  learning. Her teaching is grounded in the belief that students develop deeper technical understanding and stronger professional capability when engineering knowledge is applied to realistic, open-ended problems.

 

Her approach draws on Project-Oriented Design-Based Learning (PODBL), integrating engineering theory with design practice, industry perspectives and iterative problem-solving. Students are supported to develop not only technical competence, but also the communication, teamwork, project management, adaptability and professional judgement required in contemporary engineering practice.

 

Mariana designs authentic assessment as a developmental process in which students receive, interpret and apply feedback across successive stages of a project. Industry engagement, peer interaction, reflection and stakeholder communication are used to help students evaluate their decisions, respond to changing requirements and progressively improve both their technical work and professional practice.

 

Mariana’s educational contribution extends beyond her own teaching. She has led curriculum renewal, supported academic teams and Unit Chairs, developed collaborative communities of practice, and promoted more systematic approaches to industry engagement across engineering programs. Her work also encompasses student transition, belonging and engagement, recognising that successful engineering education depends on both high-quality curriculum and an inclusive, supportive learning environment.

 

Her current educational leadership focuses on preparing students and academic teams for the changing nature of engineering practice. This includes strengthening authentic industry partnerships, supporting research-informed curriculum design and exploring how generative artificial intelligence can be incorporated into engineering education in ways that promote capability, ethical judgement and responsible professional practice.
