DrEmma Ryan

I am a critical criminologist, dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning in the discipline with a strong research focus on the regulation of police use of less-lethal weapons such as 'tasers', as well as and police accountability more broadly. I bring a strong, applied focus to my work having worked in anti-corruption bodies in Victoria prior to joining Deakin.

I have published in leading journals and Australian textbooks and am widely cited in print, television and other digital media concerning use of tasers by police in Australia.

I have accumulated more than 25 years teaching experience in the discipline of criminology, having worked in criminology programs across Victoria. I have also worked for several years in the public sector as a Corruption Prevention and Education Officer for the Office of Police Integrity/ Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission. These experiences help me to bring a practical, grounded and evidence-based approach to my teaching, learning and research practice.
