Bilingual parenting, home and the mother tongue

Overthink co-hosts Ellie Anderson and David Peña-Guzmán interview Helen Ngo on vision as part of their series on the five senses. Dr. Ngo is the author of The Habits of Racism: A Phenomenology of Racism and Racialized Embodiment, and has published numerous articles on the phenomenology of racism with an emphasis on perception and embodiment. We discuss how racialization operates on visual levels we're not even aware of, and how philosophers such as Frantz Fanon can help us see vision differently.

In episode 4, we discuss how language use can invite discrimination and racism, and how that can make it difficult to persevere with bilingual parenting. As adults, we want to protect children rather than expose them. But overcoming feelings of shame can lead to finding a different way to move through the world. And passing on a strong sense of pride about your language and culture contributes to a strong foundation for future learning and understanding.
