MrsAlissa Maillet

Alissa is a lead member of the optometry clinical skills teaching team and Unit Chair for HMO702 – Advanced Optometric Studies 2 in the Master of Optometry degree. She has undertaken extensive curriculum mapping of the Master of Optometry course intended learning outcomes and subsequent development of practical classes, clinical simulation activities and accompanying online resources that support these learning outcomes. Alissa is the primary lecturer for the contact lenses component of the curriculum, and is a member of the clinical assessment committee responsible for delivery of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations for the Bachelor of Vision Science and Master of Optometry students.

Students and colleagues would agree that Alissa is a passionate champion for a student-centred approach to learning. Through delivery of weekly practical sessions at Waurn Ponds and supervision at clinical sessions in DCECC and at external placement sites, Alissa aims to create active and authentic learning environments. She embraces Constructivist pedagogy, emphasising active discovery learning and focuses on providing rich feedback and challenging students to reflect on their abilities while applying foundational knowledge to apply and enhance their skills. Her lessons encourage trial-and-error problem-solving and building key clinical decision-making skills. Alissa actively fosters a growth mindset, maintains high expectations, and supports students in meeting these requirements.
