RESEARCH INTERESTS

My current research examines how gender, race, culture, and law intersect across global development and human rights contexts. I analyse the social and legal histories of female genital cutting, exploring how laws aimed at prevention can also produce harm; investigate the emotional and political atmospheres shaping global women’s rights campaigns; and study inequalities of power in development and humanitarianism, particularly in locally led responses to crises such as in Ukraine. I also critically assess how gender and violence interventions in devlopment reproduce racialised and ahistorical understandings of gender and sexuality..

My future research plans are two collarborative research projects with scholars and communities in two areas:

  1. An anthropology of 'Gender Transformative Approaches’ to Gender Based Violence
  2. Homeland as localised sensibility to Humanitarian Responses
