BIO
I am a sociologist with more than 20 years experience teaching and researching in the areas of gender, feminism, media, new technologies and sport.
My current research is focused on improving women’s sport and physical activity participation by addressing gender and race disparities in sport, digital media and fan cultures. I am also investigating how digital media shapes the experiences, identities and wellbeing of women and girls, with the aim to advance knowledge about their use of social platforms and digital devices to represent themselves, share information, practice politics and build community.
I have been named the field-leading scholar in Feminism and Women's Studies in Australia over three consecutive years (The Australian, 2020-2022) in recognition of my contributions to gender and feminist scholarship in the social sciences.
In my role as co-lead of Deakin's Women in Sport and Exercise (WISE) network and the Sociology and Social Change Research Collective my goal is to support cross-Faculty collaborations, community and industry partnerships, as well as mentor and build research capacity for the next generation of scholars.
I'm the author of more than 80 publications, including 3 books and 2 edited collections: New Sporting Femininities: Embodied Politics in Postfeminist Times (2018, Palgrave, with H.Thorpe & J.Francombe-Webb), Women Sport Fans: Identification, Representation, Participation (2017, Routledge), Sport and Its Female Fans (2012, Routledge, with P.Mewett). Baudrillard Reframed (2011, I.B.Tauris), Cyborgs and Barbie Dolls (2007, I.B.Tauris).
