BIO
Helen Mildred is a senior Clinical Psychology Academic who for 28 years has held a strategic partnership role between Deakin University School of Psychology, and one of the largest public mental health services in VIctoria at Eastern Health. She brings an experienced scientist-practitioner focus to her teaching, research and service roles - something highly valued by her students, colleagues, research collaborators and senior leadship within the School.
Her partnership role has enabled her to achieve the following knowledge mobilisation:
Advance the collective training and evaluation capacities of the Australian Psychology profession through initiating and leading the AHPRA accredited Deakin University Supervisor Training Program. Helen and her vibrant team of experienced academics and senior clinicians, have trained over 1,450 psychologists to achieve or maintain Supervisor Status, placing Deakin University as a leader in psychologist professional development nationally.
Established and was the Director of the innovative Eastern Health/Deakin University Psychology Training Clinic - a University Clinic embedded within a tertiary mental health service from 2006-2020. Post-graduates on placement provided high quality assessment, formulation and evidence-based intervention skills with young people (0-25 years) and their families affected by severe and complex psychosocial context and mental illhealth. This Clinic model -an Australian first - demonstrated significantly improved clinical outcomes for its clients.
Helen teaches into a range of post graduate units bringing a deliberate practice lens as well as extensive real world clinical psychology practice and supervision experience to her teaching and training.
Helen's applied research interests include: deliberate self-harm and non-suicidal self-injury, child & youth mental health, disenfranchised young people, and the experiences of people with the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. She has published over 35 articles and book chapters in her areas of inquiry, and supervised over 20 post graduate research theses to completion. As a member of both, she brings clinical expertise to designing, implementing translating and communicating novel and important research findings across academic and health service practice communities.
