BIO

Jane Duffy is a Senior Lecturer in Health Law and Professionalism in Deakin University's Doctor of Medicine program. As the Ethics, Law and Professionalism (ELP) Theme Leader, she provides strategic leadership for the curriculum, teaching and assessment of ethics, law and professionalism across the program's four-year medical curriculum.

Jane's teaching is informed by a unique combination of experience as an optometrist, medical defence lawyer and health practitioner regulator. Before joining Deakin, she practised in both optometry and law, served on the registration boards for optometrists, osteopaths and pharmacists, and, as the inaugural Executive Officer of the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand, led the development of a national competency-based assessment for overseas-trained optometrists and the profession's first accreditation framework for entry-level optometry programs. In recognition of these contributions, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

Jane's scholarship focuses on health professions education, particularly the teaching and assessment of professionalism, health law education, and health workforce sustainability.

Within Deakin, Jane is an elected representative of the School of Medicine on the Faculty of Health Board and the ethics advisor member of the School of Medicine's Human Tissue Advisory Committee.

Beyond the University, Jane serves as Deputy Director (Optometry) with Professional Services Review (the body responsible for Medicare compliance). She is Deputy Chair of the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand's Accreditation Committee, a member of the leadership team of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) Health Law Special Interest Group, and Chair of the Asia Pacific Bioethics Education Network.
