DrElizabeth Holmes-Truscott

Dr Elizabeth Holmes-Truscott is a Senior Research Fellow in Health Psychology and Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for Behavioural Research in Diabetes (ACBRD), a partnership between Diabetes Victoria and Deakin University. In this role, she contributes to the strategic leadership and development of a multidisciplinary team of 17 researchers and students. She also serves as Behavioural Platform Lead for the Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations (ACADI), providing leadership for behavioural and psychosocial research across a multidisciplinary national research network.

Elizabeth leads a program of behavioural diabetes research focused on improving the health and quality of life of people affected by diabetes. Her work has contributed internationally to advancing understanding of diabetes stigma and discrimination and has played a leading role in global efforts to understand and address diabetes stigma, including co-leading the international consensus, Pledge and Global Summit on Ending Diabetes Stigma and Discrimination. Her research in diabetes stigma has attracted international engagement and is contributing to work with diabetes organisations globally, including Diabetes Australia, Diabetes New Zealand, Diabetes Canada, Diabetes India, and Breakthrough T1D International.

Committed to community involvement and lived-experience leadership, she works in partnership with people living with or affected by diabetes to conduct research and translation activities. She is committed to dissemination through community and public-facing pathways, including through the ACBRD’s monthly e-newsletter. She also contributes to practical resources supporting improved diabetes self-management (e.g., NDSS 'Starting Insulin' booklet) and care (e.g., NDSS diabetes stigma e-module for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers).

Elizabeth has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and secured over $8 million in research funding. She holds an editorial role with Diabetic Medicine, contributes to advisory and steering initiatives in diabetes and stigma (e.g.,Obesity Collective stigma expert group; The diaTribe Foundation (US) dStigmatize Research Group), and contributes expertiese to (inter)national research collaborations. She currently supervises three graduate research (PhD) candidates, has supervised one PhD candidate to completion, and several Honours students. She mentors early- and mid-career researchers within her team, as well as researchers across Australia and internationally through formal programs (e.g., ACADI, PSAD and Diabetes Action Canada), and hosts academic visitors to ACBRD/Deakin University.
