RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr Niroshinie Fernando’s research lies at the intersection of Software Engineering, Internet of Things (IoT), and intelligent, human-centred systems. Her work is grounded in real-world problem solving and aims to make emerging technologies more adaptive, inclusive, and scalable.

Her specific research interests include:

  • Edge and Distributed Computing: Designing and evaluating lightweight, resource-aware algorithms for mobile, drone, and IoT-based collaboration in dynamic environments, including edge-fog-cloud architectures.
  • Human-Centred IoT Systems: Developing systems that respond to user context, emotion, or behaviour - particularly in domains such as smart homes, health, assistive living, and adaptive virtual environments.
  • Mobile and Opportunistic Computing: Exploring how mobile devices and wearables can form cooperative networks for shared sensing, computation, and data flow, especially in constrained or ad-hoc scenarios.
  • AI/ML for Embedded and Real-Time Systems: Integrating machine learning techniques into distributed systems for purposes such as stress detection, sensor fault prediction, and adaptive task scheduling- while maintaining interpretability, privacy  and efficiency.
  • Inclusive Technology and Accessibility: Investigating how to design systems that are usable and empowering for underrepresented and underserved user groups.
  • Ethical and Human-Aware Robotics and Drones: Exploring how autonomous and semi-autonomous systems can collaborate ethically and efficiently with humans.
  • Human-AI Collaboration: Studying how AI can meaningfully augment human capabilities in software engineering and decision-making, with a focus on fairness and interpretability.
  • Quantum Computing: Investigating distributed quantum architectures and exploring software engineering principles for building scalable, reliable quantum applications.
