BIO

Dr Belete Jember “BJ” Bobe is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting at Deakin Business School, Australia, where he teaches and researches in management accounting and related fields. He has extensive international academic experience from universities in Australia, the United Kingdom, Ethiopia, and Egypt, and has taught accounting across undergraduate, postgraduate, honours, and doctoral programs.

 

Management accounting has been the focus of BJ’s teaching at Deakin University for more than 21 years. He has consistently achieved very high student satisfaction and has received multiple Letters of Excellence in Teaching in recognition of his sustained teaching performance. He has also held several academic leadership roles, including Director of two postgraduate programs. His current teaching focus is on integrating research, technology, and evidence-informed practice to prepare graduates for the evolving accounting profession.

 

BJ’s research centres on management accounting, particularly management control and performance management systems, in which he has published in highly ranked international journals. He also researches public accountability, sustainability accounting, accounting education, public sector accounting, and the professionalisation of accounting in developing countries. He is currently leading a research project that examines how activity-based funding information is interpreted and used by managers and clinicians in Australian hospitals to support planning, resource allocation, and organisational decision-making.

 

Outside academia, BJ has held professional roles in taxation, auditing, financial management, and financial control across Australia, Ethiopia, and the United Kingdom. He is a full member of CPA Australia, a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He actively contributes to the accountancy profession through leadership roles, including Chair of the ACCA Australia and New Zealand Members' Panel and Member of the ACCA International Assembly. He is also a candidate in the 2026 ACCA Council election.
