RESEARCH INTERESTS
Seemingly eclectic, Dr Costin’s research interests focus upon the practical application of research outputs relational to our built environment. Hence his major publications go far beyond standard construction texts – pushing practitioners to greater understandings of the import that their actions have socially, culturally, historically and environmentally. His research thus engages the ethics of materiality, safety by design, the implications of - the dialectic between - design upon structure and structure upon design including the influence of building volumes, both internal and external, and structures generally, upon place, country and people - indeed all lifeforms: attending to the effects of bushfire smoke upon our unborn being an example. Bushfire and flood risk to communities (human and non-human) are hence also engaged, with First Nations knowledges held as significant points of wisdom across the breadth of human endeavour.
Purposeful rather than prolific, Dr Costin’s works are highly influential across many aspects of our built environment – particularly its practitioners; it being not uncommon for TAFE teachers, builders, tradespeople and lecturers from other universities to contact and commend the value of his publications to their work. A transdisciplinary, much of his research goes into developing applied means for improving student knowledge and skill development across both architecture and construction management.
