BIO
Piper Is an expert in adult learning and education in community and workplace settings with a growing international reputation for research and scholarship in the field of radical adult education and praxis. She draws on her extensive knowledge of critical pedagogy and praxis in contexts in which adult learning and professional development occurs.
Before joining Deakin's School of Education, Piper worked as a secondary school history teacher and in the TAFE sector in policy and management roles. These professional experiences instilled a life-long commitment to supporting high quality, universal public education accessible to all as imperative to the flourishing of a strong and cohesive civil society. Piper's research and teaching interests investigate aspects of the socio-political history of education in Australia, often examining the influence and impact of education on how people percieve and engage in the world around them. She is a keen acolyte of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy and works in her teaching and reseach to realise a human, student-centred approach to all aspects of education and schooling.
Piper currently sits on two community organisation boards of management. She is Board Chair of Future Connect, the Local Learning and Employment Network for Brimbank and Melton in Melbourne's outer west and sits on the board of Adult Learning Australia.
Piper is co-editor (with Cheryl Ryan) of the Australian Journal of Adult Learning (AJAL).
Piper was the President of Deakin's Branch of the NTEU, the National Tertiary Education Union (2020-2023).
