DrBrandi Fox

Brandi's teaching is shaped by her research and service. Her units are designed using evidence through scholarship as well as prioritising student voice, using feedback throughout the trimester to ensure online and on campus students are agents in their learning. Her commitment to inclusive and responsive pedagogy emphasises the importance of relationality and dialogue with students, as well as the need to highlighting diverse, intersectional perspectives and knowledges, learning from and with communities, in and beyond academia.

As Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Arts Education Major she oversees ten units, five that are mapped directly to the Master of Teaching and reaching approximately 1,400 students across the Faculty of Arts and Education. Enacting her dedication to transformative praxis, in 2025 she and another colleague were awarded grant money to hire students to lead a redesign of EDU units. This involved reviewing curriculum, student-led focus groups and qualitative surveys. Students designed teaching and learning activities, leading to a redesign of EDU102 and EDU301, and advising changes across the suite of EDU units. 

Previously, Brandi has designed and taught in units across multiple courses in the Faculty of Arts and Education including the Bachelor of Education (Primary), Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and Master of Teaching (Primary and Secondary).

Brandi’s approach to teaching education and initial teacher education is unique, drawing on her interdisciplinary background, and insight into the teaching profession, and higher education through her years of experience researching schools (Government, Independent and religious). She has also designed and facilitated professional learning for primary and secondary school teachers, principals and international student coordinators (2015 – 2021). This includes managing and facilitating the Victorian Education Department's state-wide Gradate Teacher Conferences (2019 – 2021), offering professional learning for Victorian teachers in their early years in the profession.

Brandi has successful supervised 12 students to complete research theses and projects in various Master Courses, Certificates and HDR courses (MEd Research, PhD). 

As a supervisor and mentor, Brandi centres relationships and believes these are key to success. Her approach to supervising engages students in non-hierarchal ways to recognise the knowledge and experience they bring then build on their strengths.

Brandi draws on her experiences being mentored by colleagues and students, her involvement in Students as Partners, as well as being supervised across institutions for her research thesis undertaken in the Master of Development Studies at the University of Melbourne and Doctor of Philosophy at Deakn. Both HDR projects were undertaken with primary school kids ages 9 - 12, using qualitative longitudinal methods including ethnography, biography, narrative inquiry, observation, interviews, interactive art-based methods, and systematic literature review.

Brandi is also an advocate for university student engagement and belonging. As a post-graduate she was Treasurer of the Melbourne Uni Surfriders and the founding President of the Deakin University PhD Society.
