BIO

Shaun Mason is a Lecturer in Nutrition Science within Deakin University’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences and a member of the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition. His research sits at the intersection of clinical nutrition, metabolic health, and exercise physiology, with a particular focus on biochemistry, metabolomics and proteomics, and the nutritional regulation of cardiometabolic and musculoskeletal health.

Dr Mason’s program of research advances understanding of how nutrition, exercise, and other therapeutic strategies impacts on metabolic pathways involved in glucose regulation, skeletal muscle function, and chronic disease risk, particularly in populations such as individuals with type 2 diabetes. His work spans controlled clinical trials, mechanistic laboratory studies, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and, demonstrating both depth and translational reach.

He has established a growing and impactful research portfolio, with >35 peer-reviewed publications across leading journals in endocrinology, nutrition, and physiology. His contributions include clinical trials of antioxidant supplementation in people with type 2 diabetes, high-impact systematic reviews on antioxidant supplementation, and emerging work applying proteomics and multi-omics approaches to nutrition and exercise science.

A committed educator and academic leader, Dr Mason serves as Course Director for the Postgraduate suite of Courses and is/has been Unit Chair across multiple undergraduate and postgraduate units. He actively supervises PhD and Masters students in areas aligned with his research strengths, contributing to capacity-building in nutrition and metabolic health research.

His leadership and professional standing are further recognised through his designation as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and his status as a Registered Nutritionist with the Nutrition Society of Australia, signalling both teaching excellence and professional credibility.

Collectively, Dr Mason’s work reflects a rising academic trajectory characterised by interdisciplinary research and leadership in teaching and supervision.
