BIO

Dr Jodi McAlister works predominantly in the fields of popular romance studies and genre studies, working across the disciplines of literary studies, cultural studies, publishing studies and creative writing. She is the President of the International Association for the Study of Popular Romance.

 

She is the author of five academic monographs - The Consummate Virgin: Female Virginity Loss and Love in Anglophone Popular Literatures (Palgrave 2020), New Adult Fiction (Cambridge UP 2021),  Publishing Romance Fiction in the Philippines (with Claire Parnell and Andrea Anne Trinidad, Cambridge UP 2023), The Bonkbuster: Women's Popular Reading in the Long 1980s (with Amy Burge, Bloomsbury 2026), and Audio Erotica (with Athena Bellas, Routledge 2026). Her sixth - The 1980s Blockbuster: The Case of Lace (with Amy Burge, Cambridge UP) - will be published in 2027. She is also the author of numerous academic articles and book chapters. 

In addition, Jodi is an author of popular romance fiction. Her novel Not Here To Make Friends (Simon & Schuster 2024) was listed as one of the New York Times' best romance novels of 2024, and An Academic Affair (Atria 2025) was published in eight different territories and received starred reviews in Library Journal and Booklist. Her ninth novel A Study in Sparkling (Atria 2026) will be published in July, and received a starred review in Kirkus.
