BIO

Dr Saleh Gharaie is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering at Deakin University, specialising in computational fluid dynamics, transport phenomena, and multiphysics modelling. His research develops and applies advanced CFD methods to study complex flow, diffusion, and coupled transport processes across biomedical, and energy systems.

 

His core expertise includes hybrid RANS/LES modelling of transitional flows, cardiovascular haemodynamics, cell-resolved blood-flow modelling, fluid–structure interaction, diffusion analysis, and CFD modelling of PEM fuel cells. Across these areas, his work is unified by a focus on fundamental fluid-engineering principles and their translation into practical technologies.

 

In the biomedical field, Dr Gharaie applies CFD and transport modelling to cardiovascular disease and medical device innovation. His research investigates wall shear stress, disturbed flow, red blood cell dynamics, and device–flow interactions, with applications in patient-specific coronary haemodynamics, pressure-sensing smart stents, cardiac devices, and next-generation cardiovascular technologies.

 

Dr Gharaie completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology, where his research contributed to the development of a novel aortic valve. He later undertook postdoctoral training at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, collaborating with clinicians and medical device companies on the design and development of advanced cardiac devices.

 

At Deakin, Dr Gharaie leads research at the interface of CFD, transport physics, biomedical engineering, and applied multiphysics modelling. His work aims to advance both fundamental computational methods and their translation into innovative technologies for health, and energy systems.
