BIO

Dr Svetlana Stevanovic is an Associate Professor in Environmental Engineering at Deakin University. Her research focuses on air quality, atmospheric particles, and human exposure, with a particular interest in developing practical approaches to monitor and understand the health impacts of airborne pollutants.

Her work explores the oxidative potential of particulate matter- an emerging measure of how air pollution may contribute to oxidative stress and respiratory health outcomes. She has led the design and development of two monitoring instruments, the Particle Into Nitroxide Quencher (PINQ) and the Rapid Aerosol Ageing Device (RAAD), which provide new ways to assess air pollution beyond traditional mass-based metrics. These tools are now used in research and regulatory contexts to better understand pollution sources and exposure risks.

Dr Stevanovic leads the Air Quality Engineering and Aerosol Research Group at Deakin, where she works with a cross-disciplinary team on projects ranging from urban air monitoring to indoor exposure assessment. She has built national and international collaborations with universities, government agencies, and industry, and has been involved in joint studies through programs such as the European ATMO-ACCESS initiative.

Her broader research interests include pollution from traffic, combustion, indoor environments, and natural sources like pollen. She applies a range of sampling, modelling, and real-time monitoring methods to support early-warning systems and inform evidence-based decision-making.

In addition to her research, Dr Stevanovic contributes to curriculum design and student mentoring. Her teaching integrates current research and industry practices, and she is actively involved in supporting early-career researchers and higher degree students.

She has served on funding review panels, editorial boards, and advisory groups, and has helped build platforms for collaboration in aerosol science, including convening the Australia and New Zealand Aerosol Assembly.
