TEACHING EXPERTISE
My teaching focuses on supporting students to build strong foundations in exercise science, physiology and human biology. I teach into first-year units including HSE113: Human Growth and Development for Exercise Science and HSE110: Muscle Biology for Exercise Science.
A key aim of my teaching is to embed research-led learning early in the student journey. I want students to develop not only an understanding of core physiological concepts, but also an appreciation of how scientific knowledge is generated, tested and refined. This includes helping students engage with evidence, interpret physiological data, and understand the research processes that underpin what we know about the human body, exercise and adaptation.
I am also committed to supporting postgraduate and early-career researcher development. This includes providing placement opportunities, supervising honours projects, and supporting PhD students to develop into independent researchers. My aim is to help students use their experiences within my team to build the skills, confidence and networks needed to work towards their own career goals, whether these are within or outside academia.
I also value the development of teaching teams. I aim to create clear, consistent and supportive teaching environments where tutors and markers can develop confidence as educators, provide constructive feedback, and contribute to a positive learning experience for students.
Ultimately, my teaching and supervision are focused on helping students become thoughtful, evidence-informed exercise science professionals and researchers. I want students to leave my units and research team with a strong grasp of foundational physiology, an ability to think critically about scientific evidence, and confidence in applying that knowledge to health, exercise and performance contexts.
