Social Sciences Week 2026

Join local feminist activists for a briefing and discussion on key insights emerging from the world’s largest feminist conference - Women Deliver.

Academics, athletes, sports journalists and industry officials came together to dissect the results of the ABC Elite Athletes in Australian Women’s Sport Survey. Led by Deakin University and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the first-of-its-kind survey revealed that there’s systemic and cultural barriers standing in the way of female athletes receiving fair pay, equal coverage and the support systems they need to perform at their best.

The event will feature a Keynote Presentation on the evidence-based, holistic recovery and healing framework by Carolyn Robinson, Founder and CEO of Beyond DV. Dr Karen Williams and Sally Stevenson AM from the Illawarra Women's Trauma Recovery Centre will present the innovative work of Australia's first federally-funded Trauma Recovery Centre. This will be followed by a panel discussion by sector leaders: Jade Parker, ACON; Geraldine Bilston, Family Safety Victoria; Leslie Smith, Quantum Support Services, & A/Prof Jessamy Gleeson, Deakin University. Deakin University's leading research on recovery and healing will be presented by A/Prof Dr. Lata Satyen and Dr Renee Fiolet.

A half-day hybrid symposium exploring holistic healing and recovery practices and research

This presentation will begin with an outline of a lived experience of trauma as a result of sexual violence research. Following the identification of gaps in contemporary support, attendees with be provided with an overview of the need to have individual, team and institutional approaches to addressing researcher wellbeing. Participants will be able to share resources designed to enable an environment where researcher wellbeing is everyone's business, including a distress protocol for researchers undertaking sensitive-topic research. Finally, this presentation will finish with recommendations about the need to adopt a collective care approach in academia and to normalise workplace discussions about researcher trauma and safety.
